80 days to go

Former commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme, the voice of the 1966 FIFA World Cup™, died aged 81 in 2002. England were leading West Germany 3-2 in the last moments of extra-time when Geoff Hurst ran through on goal. As he did, some fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate, mistakenly thinking the full-time whistle had blown.

"Some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over," exclaimed Wolstenholme. Hurst then smashed in England's fourth goal to complete his hat-trick. "It is now!" concluded Wolstenholme.

That line has become synonymous with England's sole success at a major tournament. Unfortunately for Wolstenholme, he could not have predicted just how famous those words would become and he did not copyright them, therefore missing out on the financial rewards that could have come his way.

During his broadcasting career, the former World War II fighter pilot commentated on 23 FA Cup finals and five FIFA World Cup finals, having become the BBC's football commentator in 1948. He left the corporation in 1971 after a contract dispute.
